The yaking season is upon us and now is a great time to start looking for deals on the perfect kayak for you. That said, I was able to try out the Heritage Kayaks FeatherLite 9.5 this past week and I was very pleased with what I discovered. The FeatherLite is a nice STABLE 9.5 foot recreational kayak perfect for the beginner to intermediate kayaker.
At under $500 it provides great value and it has all the features any kayaker looks for. I think the thing I was most impressed with was its stability. Heritage talks about its stability in their sales text and they weren't lying. I put it through my normal array of tests and never felt uneasy or unstable. That said don’t go taking this down whitewater or on rough open ocean and expect to never be rolled, but the Featherlite 9.5 makes an excellent lake, stream, and even calm ocean kayak.
Beyond stability, I found the seat to be rather comfortable over the course of 3 hours, though I wished it had a slightly higher back and a little more leg room. I also would have hoped for some storage area, but given its relatively short length it wasn't possible. That said, I could easily place my dry bag right under the mesh cording without affecting my ride.
Overall I'm very pleased with the Heritage Kayaks FeatherLite 9.5. It's definitely a great contender for one of the best all-around beginner kayaks and at $500 or less you can't beat the price. I'd rate it a 4.5 out of 5, a definite great buy!
