I recently had the pleasure of testing out Ocean Kayak’s peekaboo kayak and I must say that I am truly a fan of this boat. Its main selling feature is its unique floor mounted viewing window which allows you to look directly into the water you are paddling over; it reminds me of the glass bottom boat tour I took in the Florida Keys. Although the water was still a bit murky at our testing ground at Lake Winnipesaukee I really enjoyed being able to look into the water…it’s truly a unique perspective.
But don’t think that the peekaboo’s viewing window is just a gimmick to get people to buy the kayak, I found that it’s more than worthy of being my everyday kayak. The peekaboo is a sit-on-top designed kayak that actually performs very well on calm to moderate waters. The new grab handles and hull design felt very solid and made entering and re-entering easy enough.
For those with children the Ocean Kayak peekaboo is designed with an additional jump seat that is perfect for smaller paddlers and allows them a perfect view of the viewing port. Although I didn’t test the jump seat I found the main paddler seat to be comfortable and was able to paddle for several hours without any discomfort except for a bit in my arms (I seem a bit out of shape)! Additionalyl I found the room for gear to be decently sized and was able to carry my pack and lunch along for the ride.
Overall I was very happy with the performance, comfort and feature set of the Ocean Kayak peekaboo. At a price point ranging anywhere from $900 to as low as the mid to high $700 range the peekaboo makes a great addition for any outdoor loving family or even the occasional paddler and would be ideal for beginner to intermediate paddlers.
We give Ocean Kayak's peekaboo a rating of 4.5 out of 5.
