The Dirigo 106 from Old Town received Paddler Magazine's Paddler's Picks Award in 2005 and we can certainly see why after taking it out on the lake. This recreational kayak is a wonderful mix of form and function combining a smooth and comfortable ride, while also giving great control and tracking. The Dirigo 106 makes for the perfect beginner/intermediate paddler looking to spend a day out on the lake and/or river while still performing up to the standards of any experienced paddler.
At a length of 10 and a half feet you might think that this might be too much boat for a beginner, yet Old Town’s patented Stabil-form™ hull design delivered outstanding stability while still tracking exceptionally well. Beyond its control and stability, this is certainly one of the more comfortable entry level kayaks that I’ve had the pleasure to paddle in. The Dirigo 106 sports a padded high-back seat that can be adjusted in three ways.
The Dirigo 106 also has plenty of built in storage and accessories making it simple to carry almost any cargo you may need while out on the water. There are two waterproof compartments located in-dash and at the rear, 2 drink holders (frosty drinks not included), as well as bungee deck rigging at bow and stern to hold even more gear.
On a slightly negative note, we did notice some splash coming up from the hull at times as well as noticed that the seat base did tend to loosen up as the day went on and required re-tightening. Overall however I must say that this is one of my favorite beginner recreational kayaks that I’ve tested so far. Stability and comfort in mind, the Old Town Dirigo 106 would make the perfect entry-level kayak or family kayak.
We give the Old Town Dirigo 106 a 5 out of 5! Most definitely recommended.
