After hanging up our paddles for the winter, we are finally able to get back out on the water and more importantly back in our kayaks. This past weekend we had the opportunity to test out the Wilderness Systems Pamlico 100 kayak and we are quite impressed. Starting at under $600 this beginners’ kayak is both stable and relatively on calm water and even proves capable on lakes with a little chop on them.
At just around 10’ long and 2.5’ wide the stability of the Pamlico 100 is one of its best characteristics. We were passed by a motor boat at high speed and the chop produced didn’t faze us in the least. With such a wide stance in the water, we did notice that it isn’t the fastest kayak in the water, but is by no means slow. Additionally, the Pamlico is extremely easy to paddle and maneuver making it ideal for the novice paddler.
Features of notoriety include its adjustable high back seat, roomy cockpit area (I’m 6’5” and was able to fit in it comfortably) and its low weight (only 42 pounds). The 1 complaint we had was its storage compartment as it barely qualifies for one. It isn’t separated from the rest of the boat so a dry bag is definitely recommended to keep your additional gear safe and dry.
Overall, I would rate the Wilderness Systems Pamlico 100 a 4.5 out of 5. It’s a great beginners kayak for a great price (prices as low as $525) and one that you won’t necessarily grow out of as you become more experienced. If you are looking for a kayak that’s perfect for the entire family and that’s durable enough to last for years then we seriously suggest taking a look at the Pamlico 100.
